DVD, originally an acronym for Digital Video Disk or Digital Versatile Disc, is an exciting format for storing digital video, audio, pictures and computer information. Since 1999, DVD players have outsold VHS players, and will eventually replace the VHS format. DVD offers superior visual quality, better than CD sound, and a longevity of more than 100 years. With features like, chapter searches, interactive menus, multiple audio and video tracks, and much more, DVD is the ultimate choice as your viewing format. Top The DVD Format Supports: Broadcast-quality video Better-than-CD audio Multiple audio and video tracks Massive computer data storage Single format for playback on most DVD players Backward compatibility with CD Interactive capabilities and random access Links to web sites Top What About DVD Players? Most DVD players support a standard set of features: Language choice for automatic selection of video scenes, audio tracks, subtitle tracks, and menus (requires additional content on the disc) Special effects playback: freeze, stop, slow, fast, and scan (no reverse play or reverse step) Parental lock Programmability (playback of selected sections in a desired sequence) Random play and repeat play Digital audio output (PCM stereo and Dolby Digital (AC-3)) Compatibility with audio CDs Some players support additional features: Component (YUV or RGB) video output for higher-quality picture Progressive-scan component (YUV or RGB) output for highest-quality analog picture Six-channel analog output from internal audio decoder Recognition and output of DTS Digital surround audio tracks Compatibility with video CDs Compatibility with laserdiscs Reverse single frame stepping RF output (for TVs with no direct video input) Multilingual on-screen display Digital zoom (2x or 4x -- this is a player feature, not a DVD disc feature) If you intend to include non-standard features in your DVD presentation, make sure your intended audience will be able to take advantage of them. Top Preservation Tape is a great medium to shoot footage on but a poor way to store it. Tape heads wear on the tape during every viewing and chemical processes are at work destroying your tape. Things like temperature, dust, and time all play a part in the slow deterioration of your videotape even while it sits on a shelf. Tapes as little as 10 years old could be in serious jeopardy from wear, disintegration, and magnetic fields. A DVD should last over 100 years and the quality will be as good on the 100th year as it is the first time you watch it, which is why transferring your video footage to DVD is the smart way to preserve, protect, and organize your memories. Top Convenience Instead of fast- forwarding or rewinding to a specific spot in your video, a DVD lets you skip right to a specific point, bypassing all of the video in between. The DVD Menu has "Chapters" which are places where you want to be able to skip to, usually a new scene or event. By pressing the Menu button on your DVD players remote, you can access chapter points and move to the exact spot within your video that you want to watch. Top Video Quality The best thing about DVD is the quality of the video. While a normal VHS tape only offers 240 vertical lines of resolutions, a DVD allows a full 480 lines of vertical resolution and an amazing 540 lines of horizontal resolution. This means that your picture is much sharper and more detailed. For additional information on DVD video quality, click here. Top Audio Quality Each DVD disc we make will have the audio transcoded into 2-channel Dolby Digital (AC-3) audio format. The superior compression of the Dolby Digital format allows higher quality video to be put on your DVD. If your audio is one channel mono, we will split it into two channels, giving you a pseudo-stereo effect, for a more enjoyable listening experience. A DVD disc is the same size as a CD and come contained in an individual case that not only protects them but is also very convenient to store. The Amaray-style case is identical to the ones that Hollywood uses to package their DVD movies in. For additional information on DVD packaging, click here.
